Gina FriendThe Gina Friend Distinguished
Service Award was established in 1994 in honor of Gina
Friend, former manager of the University of Toronto Faculty
Club. Named in her honor, this prestigious award is presented
periodically by the Association to recognize those individuals
retiring from club management who have made a significant
contribution of time and talent in service to the Association
of College and University Clubs. To be eligible to receive
the Gina Friend Distinguished Service Award, an individual
must:
* Be nominated and seconded by members of the Board
of Directors
* Be retiring from active club management
* Have been a primary representative of a member club for a period of not
less than ten years
* Have served the Association as a member of the Board of Directors for not
less than six years, of which at least two years must have been as a general
officer of the Association
* Have served as a host for an ACUC conference
* Be approved by at least two-thirds of the members of the Board of Directors
As General Manager of the Faculty Club
of the University of Toronto for 16 years, Gina Friend
earned the recognition and respect of her peers in club
management. She began her tenure with the Faculty Club
in 1972, serving as Assistant Manager for the first three
years. She enrolled the U of T Faculty Club as a Charter
Member of AFCI in 1978, and in 1979, attended her first
conference at McGill University in Montreal. In 1985,
Gina was elected Treasurer of the Association. During
her four years as Treasurer, she developed an accurate
set of books, and prudently managed Association finances,
building a reserve fund for the fledgling organization.
In 1989, Gina was appointed Vice President, and also
hosted the 12th Annual AFCI Conference in Toronto. She
was elected President of the Association in 1990, and
served as Past President in 1991 and 1992. Her leadership
and tireless volunteer efforts on behalf of AFCI throughout
those years laid the foundation for the Association's
continued growth and success.
